Hitchita is a small unincorporated community located in McIntosh County, Oklahoma, United States. It is situated near the North Canadian River and is approximately 7 miles east-northeast of Checotah. According to the 2010 United States Census, the population of Hitchita was reported to be 127.
The community was named after a nearby creek, which in turn was named after a Muscogee (Creek) Indian chief called Hitchites Harjo. Hitchita was established in the early 1900s as a stop on a railroad line connecting the cities of Okmulgee and Muskogee. Agriculture and oil and gas production have been the major industries in the area.
Hitchita has a post office, a Baptist church, and a few small stores. There are also several recreational areas located nearby, such as Lake Eufaula and Checotah Creek. The town has a rural, agricultural character and is home to farms and ranches.
